City of Palmetto Police Department recently issued the following announcement.
The Palmetto Police Department is searching for qualified applicants for the position of certified police officer. Applicants must meet the minimum statutory standards as described at the end of this post. Experienced law enforcement officers from in or out of the State of Florida are strongly encouraged to apply.
Applicants with prior law enforcement experience may be eligible for a higher starting salary. Along with a competitive salary and PBA union-negotiated pay scale, the Palmetto Police Department and City of Palmetto offer the following benefits:

• Robust pension plan with full retirement options after 23 years of service and early retirement options for vested employees and up to four years of credit for prior active duty military service

Applicants must have completed or be more than 50% through a CJSTC approved Basic Law Enforcement Academy (exceptions apply for out-of-state officers enrolling in an equivalency of training academy.) Below are the State of Florida minimum requirements to become a police officer:
• Be at least 19 years of age for law enforcement and correctional probation.
• Be a citizen of the United States.
• Have earned a high school graduate or equivalent (GED).
• Have not been convicted of any felony or of any misdemeanor involving perjury or a false statement.
• Any person who, after July 1, 1981, pleads guilty or nolo contendere to, or is found guilty of any felony or of a misdemeanor involving perjury or a false statement, shall not be eligible for employment or appointment as an officer, not-withstanding suspension of sentence or withholding of adjudication.
• Have never received a dishonorable discharge from any of the Armed Forces of the United States.
• Have good moral character.
• Have successfully completed the Florida Basic Recruit Training Program for the respective discipline or completed the Equivalency of Training process.
• Have achieved a passing score on the State Officer Certification Examination.
