Rep. Vern Buchanan, a long-serving member of the U.S. Congress representing Florida’s 16th district, shared several updates on social media regarding significant historical commemorations and legislative actions. Buchanan, who has been in office since 2007 after succeeding Katherine Harris, highlighted his district’s pride in its World War II veterans and discussed recent congressional efforts to address foreign influence in American educational institutions.

On May 8, 2025, Buchanan commemorated the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day by honoring World War II veterans. He stated, “Eighty years ago today, victory in Europe was declared, marking the end of World War II.” He expressed pride that Florida’s 16th District is home to approximately 263 World War II veterans whom he referred to as “true American heroes.”

Later that day, Buchanan addressed concerns about foreign influence within American universities. On May 8, he posted about legislative measures taken by the House GOP against certain Chinese entities: “We will NOT allow the Chinese Communist Party to spread propaganda in American universities.” The tweet mentioned the passage of the DHS Restrictions on Confucius Institutes and Chinese Entities of Concern Act aimed at preventing taxpayer dollars from funding adversarial university programs.

On May 9, Buchanan posted a tweet without additional commentary or context but included a link: https://t.co/w1eT6nyjcL
