Rep. Vern Buchanan, a long-serving member of the U.S. Congress representing Florida’s 16th district, recently shared several updates on social media regarding his legislative efforts and community initiatives. Known for his commitment to law enforcement and youth opportunities, Buchanan continues to focus on issues relevant to his constituents.
On May 16, 2025, Buchanan announced his collaboration with Rep. Barragan during National Police Week to introduce a new training course aimed at law enforcement officers who respond to Alzheimer’s patients. In his post, he emphasized the importance of preparing officers for emergencies involving such patients. “During #NationalPoliceWeek, I’m proud to work with @RepBarragan to establish a new training course for law enforcement officers responding to Alzheimer’s patients.”
Later that day, Buchanan reminded high school students in Florida’s 16th district about his annual Service Academy Fair scheduled for Saturday, May 17th. This event is an opportunity for students interested in military academies to gather information and explore their options. ” Reminder! My annual Service Academy Fair for all high school students in FL-16 will take place this Saturday, May 17th.”
In another update on the same day, Buchanan highlighted the dangers faced by law enforcement officers and advocated for the passage of his Thin Blue Line Act. He argued that there should be severe consequences for those who target police officers and shared an op-ed co-authored with Manatee County Sheriff Rick Wells on this subject. “Law enforcement officers put their lives on the line to keep us safe.”
Vern Buchanan has been serving in Congress since 2007 after replacing Katherine Harris and has previously served in the Florida House of Representatives. Born in Detroit in 1951 and now residing in Sarasota, he holds degrees from Cleary University and the University of Detroit Mercy.
