Rep. Vern Buchanan, a longstanding member of the U.S. Congress representing Florida’s 16th district since 2007, recently shared updates on several key initiatives via social media. Born in Detroit in 1951 and currently residing in Sarasota, Buchanan has been an influential figure in Florida politics.

On May 8, 2025, Buchanan expressed his support for a legislative move to designate the Gulf of Mexico as the “Gulf of America.” He stated: “Proud to join my Republican colleagues and make the #GulfofAmerica official.” Emphasizing its significance, he added that Floridians recognize the Gulf’s importance to their economy and way of life.

Later that day, Buchanan lauded President Biden for achieving a significant trade agreement with the United Kingdom. He remarked: “.@POTUS has once again delivered for the American people with a historic U.S.-UK trade agreement that puts our workers and businesses first.” As part of his role on the Trade Subcommittee within the House Ways and Means Committee, he anticipates more equitable trade deals in the future.

In another update on May 8, Buchanan discussed his meeting with representatives from Port Manatee Railroad and CSX regarding infrastructure improvements. He tweeted: “Great to meet with representatives from Port Manatee Railroad and @CSX to discuss critical infrastructure and rail safety investments in Florida’s 16th Congressional District.”

Vern Buchanan graduated from Cleary University with a BA in 1975 and later from the University of Detroit Mercy in 1986.
