Vern Buchanan, currently serving in the U.S. Congress representing Florida’s 16th district, recently shared several updates on his Twitter account. Buchanan, who has been a member of Congress since 2007 after replacing Katherine Harris, has also served in the Florida House of Representatives. Born in Detroit, Michigan in 1951 and now residing in Sarasota, Buchanan graduated from Cleary University and the University of Detroit Mercy.

On March 3rd, 2025, Rep. Vern Buchanan expressed his sorrow over the passing of former Rep. Lincoln Díaz-Balart. He described Díaz-Balart as “the definition of a public servant” and noted his influence as a mentor during Buchanan’s early years in Congress. He also recognized Díaz-Balart’s significant contributions to Florida politics and his advocacy for a free Cuba. “Saddened by the death of my friend, former Rep. Lincoln Díaz-Balart…”

Later that day, Buchanan conveyed his appreciation for First Lady Jill Biden’s support for the TAKE IT DOWN Act—a legislative effort he helped introduce aimed at criminalizing revenge porn deepfakes and mandating their removal to protect children from sexual exploitation. “Grateful to hear @FLOTUS fighting for the TAKE IT DOWN Act…”

In another post on March 3rd, Buchanan celebrated Florida’s 180th birthday by reflecting on his own journey to the state where he pursued business opportunities and raised his family. He expressed pride in calling Florida home alongside millions of other residents who have made similar moves to the Sunshine State. “Happy 180th Birthday, Florida!”
