Edward Waters College issued the following announcement.
Caytlin was born into an empowered household of women on March 13, 2001, in Houston, Texas. From a young age, her mother taught her there was more to achieve in the world than what her eyes could see. Her household catchphrase was that we could “do anything through Christ Jesus.” Caytlin states, “I revolve my life around that message and have applied it to every aspect.” Miss Willis attended Westside High School where she held the captain position of the volleyball team along with memberships in Black Student Association and Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA). On February 8, 2019, she signed to Edward Waters College to further her education as a Biology major and to continue her volleyball career. As a freshman, she was ranked number two for highest hitting percentages in the conference while simultaneously maintaining a 3.3 GPA. Going into her sophomore year, she currently holds membership in the Tiger Nation, Trio, The NAACP, Cross Country, Community Outreach, and The Biology Club. Caytlin says, “I love being active on campus, and I aspire to contribute to any space that I step into. Serving EWC has been one of my biggest highlights. My favorite chant is Tiger Spirit, and if you catch me at any athletic event, I’m the loudest thing you’ll hear. It is more than my pleasure to be a student leader here at EWC!!”
Miss Willis says, “Edward Waters College has provided a home away from home. Commuting all the way from Texas as an only child has been a very stressful experience for my mother and me. I can truly say that I’ve met the best people here. Not only is the atmosphere positive with the friends and family, but I have also been pushed to be the best that I can be. I thank EWC for the many laughs and adventures. I’m even grateful for the tears I’ve shed on Chapel Wednesdays.”
Caytlin concludes, “Education is one of the most powerful things on this Earth. No one can take your knowledge from you. The power that the mind holds is unknown to many, but once you realize it’s worth, you’re unstoppable at that point. There’s also no knowledge without history. I’ve learned more things about Black History in one year at EWC than I learned all four years of high school. In every class, black history is incorporated, and it inspires me to dig deeper. In my opinion, the most powerful person on earth is an educated black woman.”
