Town of Longboat Key Response to Red Tide

5

Town of Longboat Key issued the following announcement on Aug. 10.

The Town’s canal clean-up efforts are unique compared to other municipalities. They are labor intensive and can only be undertaken when impacts are severe.

We continue to monitor red tide conditions on the island. The latest update and reporting from FWC has indicated high concentrations in the Sarasota and Manatee County area, including Longboat Key. The link to FWC’s red tide status is https://myfwc.com/research/redtide/statewide/

We continue to experience the irritating effects of red tide in the area- both on the Gulf and Bay sides. The observed and reported fill kills are still mostly minor in our area and we have staff monitoring the island daily. Fish kill accumulations are somewhat driven by winds and tidal changes.
