Edward Waters College Athletics issued the following announcement on Nov. 10.
The Edward Waters women's basketball team hung tough against NCAA Division I Bethune-Cookman in their exhibition contest. The Lady Tigers however fell just short in their upset bid, falling 70-58 Wednesday evening at Historic Moore Gymnasium.
EWU led 7-5 with 8:06 left in the first quarter, but a 21-9 run by the Lady Wildcats to close out the quarter provided BCU with ample breathing room that they would not relinquish again in the contest. The Lady Tigers were only able to cut the lead down to eight in the second quarter, but another BCU run sent the two teams to the locker room with the Lady Wildcats up 43-29.
The third quarter saw BCU's lead grow to as much as 17 points in the late stages of the quarter with the Lady Wildcats leading 62-45. Edward Waters was able to outscore Bethune-Cookman 13-8 in the fourth quarter, but the margin proved to be too great as BCU earned the victory in their season opener.
Edward Waters shot just 31% from the floor on 21-67 shooting compared to BCU's 53% on 25-47 shooting. One of the few bright lights for the Lady Tigers was their ability to turn the Lady Wildcats over. EWU forced 22 Bethune-Cookman turnovers that turned into 21 points. The Lady Tigers also enjoyed success on second chance points, outscoring BCU 12-8.
Junior center Emari Bell continued her hot start to the season with another double-double effort with a game-high 24 points and 10 rebounds. Senior forward La'Quanza Glover had 18 points and eight rebounds for EWU as well.
The Lady Tigers will return home to the Adams-Jenkins Complex on Saturday where they will host the Lady Lions of Paine College. Tip-off is set for 2:00pm.
