Edward Waters College Athletics recently issued the following announcement.
A remarkable second half effort from Edward Waters lifted the Lady Tigers past Saint Augustine's, 70-63 in a pre-Thanksgiving, CIAA vs. SIAC women's basketball matchup on Wednesday afternoon at Emery Gymnasium.
The first quarter of the contest was a near mirror image of Edward Waters' last action on Monday night against Claflin, where the Lady Tigers struggled out of the gate. EWU found themselves down by as much as eight points in the first quarter, trailing Saint Augustine's (2-3) 10-2 with 4:43 remaining. The Lady Tigers closed the gap to five, but a Lady Falcons run gave them a double digit lead at the end of the quarter, leading 24-14.
Another strong start for SAU saw them push their advantage to as much as 15 points in the second quarter. ultimately taking a 42-30 lead at halftime.
The Lady Tigers efforts were more concentrated on the defensive end, turning SAU mistakes into points. Edward Waters went on an incredible 20-6 run over the first 4:16 of the third quarter, leading 50-48. The Lady Tigers took a one point advantage at 54-53 going into the fourth quarter.
The fourth quarter was back and forth with each team having opportunities with the lead. Edward Waters took the lead for good on an Emari Bell layup with 4:56 remaining in the fourth, leading 62-61. A key three pointer from freshman guard Camryn Siemer gave the Purple and Orange a four point cushion at 65-61 with just over a minute remaining. The Lady Tigers were able to hit their free throw opportunities down the stretch and close out their quick two-game road trip through the CIAA with victory.
Edward Waters closed the contest hitting 42.9% of their shots on 21-of-49 shooting and was 5-of-15 from the three-point line for 33.3%. For Saint Augustine's, they finished shooting 48% from the floor and 40% from the bonus sphere. EWU scored 27 points off of 27 Lady Falcon turnovers and had a 32-20 edge in points in the paint.
All five Lady Tigers starters finished Wednesday's action scoring in double figures. Senior guard Sha'Kawanza Brown led all scorers with 17 points and six rebounds. Graduate guard/forward La'Quanza Glover had 13 points and eight boards, senior guard Teiyahna Hutchinson had 12 points, while both senior forward Molly Ragle and junior center Emari Bell had 10 points apiece for EWU.
The Lady Tigers will return to SIAC action as they welcome Lane College for a "Black Friday" matchup in Jacksonville at 5:30pm. Due to floor construction occuring at the Adams-Jenkins Complex, the contest will take place at the James Weldon Johnson Auxiliary Gymnasium on campus.
