Edward Waters College recently issued the following announcement.
A double digit halftime lead went by the wayside in the second half for Edward Waters in a tough 83-82 home loss to Clark Atlanta in a men's basketball matchup Wednesday evening at the James Weldon Johnson Auxiliary Gymnasium.
Edward Waters (7-10) came out of the gates strong in the first half, building a six point lead at 15-9 with 11:27 left. The Tigers then went on a 12-0 run down the stretch in the half to build their lead to double digits, ultimately taking a 14 point lead into the locker room at 38-24. EWU rode the strength of their defense in the first half, holding Clark Atlanta (6-6) to just 20% shooting from the floor and a 1-13 effort from the vistors from the three point line.
The start of the second half, saw the Purple & Orange build what initially appeared to be a commanding lead at 42-26, but the visitors from Atlanta had other ideas. Midway through the second half, CAU chopped the lead to single digits at 51-42 with 13:01 remaining in the half. Clark Atlanta took their first lead since early in the first half at the, 7:24 mark of the second at 61-60. The two teams jostled for position down the stretch, but CAU built their lead up to four at 76-72 with 1:09 remaining. Back to back three point shots from Kimani Binder chopped the CAU lead down to one at 81-81 with :08 remaining. After a quick foul, CAU connected on two free throws to push their lead back out to three with :04 remaining. EWU had some miscommunication as a desperation heave from Chandler Fointno was put in by Jonathan Kayanga, leaving the Tigers one point short of tying the contest and sending the game into overtime.
Clark Atlanta outshot EWU 65% to 57% in the second half and went 57% from three point range to just 33% in the half for the Tigers. For the game, Edward Waters was able to outshoot the Panthers 52% to 39%. The biggest area of concern for the Tigers were the high amount of turnovers. EWU turned the ball over 29 times that led to 26 points for Clark Atlanta.
Senior guard/forward Elias Harden led five Tigers in double figures on the night with 19 points and four rebounds. Senior guard Kimani Binder finished with 16 points and four boards in his home debut. Senior center Bryant Nolan, Jr. had 14 points, sophomore center Jonathan Kayanga turned in a double-double effort with 12 points and a game high 21 rebounds, and graduate student guard Chandler Fointno finished with 10 points for Edward Waters.
The Tigers will look to rebound on Saturday evening at 8:00pm as they will host the Ambassadors of Oakwood University at the James Weldon Johnson Auxiliary Gymnasium.
