Baseball moves over .500 with series sweep at Benedict

The Edward Waters baseball squad was able to take care of business in a major way in their final road series of the regular season. The Tigers were able to take all three-games of their series against Benedict at Tiger Field. Edward Waters won Saturday's doubleheader 18-5 and 10-6, and completed the sweep on Sunday, 13-8.

With the three-game sweep, the Purple & Orange push their record above .500 for the first time since the season opener, when Edward Waters beat Warner. 

GAME ONE: EWU 18, Benedict 5:

Edward Waters found their offensive momentum in the contest, outhitting Benedict 14-8, with three Tiger home runs hit in the contest. Sophomore second baseman John Nobles hit two homers in the contest to finish game one 2-for-3 with four RBIs and three runs scored. 

Freshman Octavis Clayton made the most of his first collegiate start, going 2-for-4 with his first career homerun in the top of the 5th inning. Senior shortstop Payton Shubert extend his hitting streak to six, finishing 3-for-5 with a double, two RBIs, and three runs scored.

Sophomore RHP Alexander Davila moved his record to 3-4 on the year, going 6.0 innings, and struck out a game high nine batters in the contest.

GAME TWO: EWU 10, Benedict 6:

The Tigers never trailed in Game Two, once again scoring double-digit runs and outhitting BC 10-7. 

Payton Shubert's hitting streak stretched to seven as well as hitting his team high fifth homerun of the season. Shubert finished 2-for-3 with that homer, three RBI's and two runs scored.

John Nobles continued his stellar day, falling a single and a homer short of hitting for the cycle in game two. Nobles also finished 2-for-3, with a double, a triple, and four RBIs.

Will Valenti moved to 7-1 on the year with his second complete game effort of the year with four strikeouts.

GAME THREE: EWU 13, Benedict 8:

Benedict scored the first three runs of the contest in the bottom of the 1st off of starter Joseph Eischen. The Purple & Orange got their offensive efforts in gear in the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th innings to take the lead and never looked back.

Leonel Garcia and Payton Shubert led the EWU efforts, each going 3-for-5 at the plate. John Nobles hit his fourth homerun of the weekend, a three-run shot in the top of 9th inning to preserve victory for the Tigers.

Joseph Eischen won his fourth contest of the season on the mound, going 5.0 innings and striking out seven Benedict batters.

Edward Waters will wrap up their 2022 regular season at home with a three-game series against Albany State. Game one of the set will begin at 6:00pm on Thursday, April 28th.
