High School seniors from public and private high schools across Manatee and Sarasota counties faced off this spring in the annual Math ACES competition organized by State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota (SCF). The contest was first created at SCF Venice in 1996 to encourage and reward math excellence. Like years past, SCF’s mathematics department faculty members created, administered and graded exam questions in algebra, geometry, precalculus, calculus, statistics and probability.
Winners from each participating school in Manatee County were: Erika Nguyen, State College of Florida Collegiate School – Bradenton; Jonathan Taylor, Braden River High School; Timothy Jacob Bellaire, Lakewood Ranch High School; Angela Hoyle, Palmetto High School; Jessica Burdette, Manatee High School; Liam Gonzales, Parrish Community High School; Alexander Thao, Bayshore High School; Madison Barendse, Southeast High School; Michael Thomas, Saint Stephen’s Episcopal School; Connor Lea, Out-of-Door Academy; and Hannah Pickhardt, Bradenton Christian School.
Winners from each participating school in Sarasota County were: Ricardo Prado Cunha, Pineview High School; Matthew Lukowsky, Riverview High School; Joseph French, North Port High School; Jack Wardlaw, Venice High School; Rafael Treminio Bravo, Suncoast Polytechnical High School; Dylan Martin, Sarasota High School; and Ryan Modjeski, Sarasota High School.
The top scorer from each of the 18 participating high schools will receive a $150 cash award and a certificate of recognition at their senior awards ceremony.
The name Math ACES comes from the event’s original sponsor, the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). The 2022 sponsors were the American Society of Civil Engineers SunCoast Branch, the Florida Engineering Society Myakka Chapter, Marsabel Engineering, and Hyatt Survey Services.
