Coding Academy Cohort Presents Software Engineering Skills at “Demo Day”

Five students from the Flatiron Software Engineering Bootcamp at State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota’s (SCF) Coding Academy presented their programming skills to an audience of industry experts on Saturday, August 20. The Software Engineering Demo Day event gave the students a forum to display the skills developed at the Coding Academy, network with local industry representatives, and practice presenting themselves to potential employers.

The students who presented web applications at Demo Day were Darrian Bagley, Emily DeHaan, Jawara Gordon, Benjamin Howe, and Jonny Ortiz. The five programmers make up the inaugural cohort of bootcamp students at the Coding Academy. Throughout the bootcamp, the students also benefitted from mentorship provided by IT professionals through a partnership with S-One Holdings Corporation.

Opening remarks at the event were given by Jamie Smith, associate vice president of communications and government relations for SCF. Janelle Piersoll, S-One’s vice president of IT delivered a keynote address. Ron Serpliss, interim dean of lifelong learning and workforce development gave closing comments.

The bootcamp began in March. The 24-week program concluded Sept. 1. Bootcamp class sessions take place during weekday evenings and on weekends to fit the participants’ busy lives, including work and family commitments. At the conclusion of the bootcamp, the students will be prepared to launch their IT careers in well-paying, high-demand jobs.

The Coding Academy is one of the primary entities housed in the 26 West Center, SCF’s hub for entrepreneurship and technology training. The next cohort to launch in the software engineering bootcamp will begin in October. In addition to bootcamps, the Coding Academy offers numerous industry certification courses to help people change careers or bolster their present employment.
