Congressman Vern Buchanan has been reappointed as Chairman of the House Democracy Partnership (HDP) for the 119th Congress. The announcement was made by Speaker Mike Johnson. Buchanan, who has served on the Commission for over a decade, first became Chairman in 2023. During his tenure, HDP collaborated with more than 1,600 Members of Parliament and staff from 47 countries.
“With ongoing global crises, our strength and leadership abroad is critical to combat growing aggression,” said Buchanan. “As Chairman, I look forward to continuing the important bipartisan work of HDP to strengthen the democratic institutions of our partner nations.”
Under Buchanan's leadership, HDP will continue its role as a resource for developing democracies worldwide and as a forum for strengthening relationships with legislatures globally.
The House Democracy Partnership is a bipartisan commission of the U.S. House of Representatives established in 2005. It supports legislative institutions through peer-to-peer exchanges, training seminars, and material assistance in areas like legislative oversight and budget analysis. The partnership receives support from USAID along with implementing partners such as the International Republican Institute (IRI) and the National Democratic Institute (NDI).
