Softball Drops Road Doubleheader to (RV) Coastal Georgia

6

Edward Waters College issued the following announcement on March 3.

The road proved to be unkind for Edward Waters in their Wednesday softball doubleheader against (RV) Coastal Georgia. The Lady Tigers allowed three critical runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to CCGA and fell 4-2 in Game One, and did not find their offensive rhythm in Game Two, falling 6-1.

GAME ONE: Coastal Georgia 4, Edward Waters 2:

The Lady Tigers (12-5) certainly had their chances to snatch Game One away from Coastal Georgia (17-1), but could not cash in as they left nine runners stranded on the basepaths.

CCGA scored first in the bottom of the first, and held on to their 1-0 lead until the top of the fourth inning. Junior transfer first baseman Tiara Peters hit a towering solo home run over the center field wall to tie the contest up at 1-1.

EWU added another run in the top of the fifth inning, thanks to an RBI single from freshman DP Brooke Rice.

Things looked good for Edward Waters up until the bottom of the sixth inning, when the Mariners scored three runs on two RBI doubles to retake the lead and closed things out in the top of the seventh to snatch victory away from the Lady Tigers.

Sophomore 2B Jade Mention went 1-for-3 at the plate with a walk and a run scored, while both Rice and Peters went 1-for-4 with an RBI for Edward Waters.

Sophomore P Milani Sablan took the loss for EWU, going 5.0 innings, allowing five hits, four earned runs, three walks, and struck out two.

GAME TWO: Coastal Georgia 6, Edward Waters 1:

The second game of the doubleheader was one to forget for Edward Waters as they could not get around some strong pitching from Coastal Georgia. The Mariners' starter racked up 13 total strikeouts against the Lady Tigers, and only gave up four hits.

The two teams went scoreless until the bottom of the fourth inning, when Coastal Georgia scored the first two runs of the game. They added four more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to take a commanding 6-0 lead.

EWU's lone run of the contest came in the top of the seventh, when freshman CF Jamiyah Holmes hit an RBI single up the middle that scored sophomore 3B Valeria Johnson.

Peters finished 1-for-2 at the plate with a walk, while sophomore SS Jazmin Lamug, sophomore C Emily Smith, and Holmes each finished 1-for-3.

Freshman P Gracie Mejia was tagged with the loss for EWU, going 5.0 innints, allowing six hits, two earned runs, walked one, and struck out two.

Edward Waters will return to the home diamond on Monday, March 7th for a crosstown showdown with Trinity Baptist. First pitch of their doubleheader is slated for 2:00pm at J. Gardner "Nip" Sams Softball Park.
