Second Half Surge Pushes Women's Soccer to First Win of Season

A career afternoon for sophomore Claudia Maté helped push Edward Waters to their first win of the young 2022 season over LaGrange College, 2-1 on Friday morning at the Nathaniel Glover Community Field & Stadium.

Both teams went scoreless in the first half thanks to stellar defensive plays from both goalkeepers. The visitors from Georgia had the better of the chances in the first half with eight shots, compared to just four from the Lady Tigers.

The second half was owned by the Purple and Orange as they turned the tide in the match. Maté's first goal came off of a corner kick in the 57th minute to crack the scoreboard. In the 72nd minute, Maté repeated the feat with her second goal to take a two goal advantage. LaGrange scored a late goal in the 88th minute, but the damage was already done as EWU notched their first victory of the year.

Edward Waters outshot LaGrange 12-2 in the second half and 16-10 overall. Senior Destianna Manning led the Lady Tigers with four shots on goal in the match. Sophomore Sheila Pascual finished with five total saves in the contest for EWU.

The Lady Tigers will hit the road on Monday, September 8th for a 4:00pm kick-off against HBCU foe Albany State in Albany, Georgia.
