Second Half Implosion Sends Tigers To Road Loss At Lane

Edward Waters had several golden opportunities at notching their first victory of the season. Unfortunately for the Tigers, a rough second half was costly dropping a 20-9 road decision to Lane in an SIAC matchup on Saturday at Liberty Technology Magnet High School Stadium.

The Tigers (0-4, 0-3 SIAC) played their best first half of football to start, pitching a three & out defensively on Lane's opening drive. On the ensuing drive, Edward Waters cracked the scoreboard first with a six-yard rushing TD from De'Shaun Hugee to give EWU a 7-0 lead. The Tigers and Dragons went back and forth but no further scoring happened in the half as EWU took their first halftime lead of the season.

From there, the second half was not kind to the Purple and Orange. Lane recovered the second half kickoff, off of an EWU fumble. The Dragons took advantage, scoring a touchdown to knot the contest up at 7-7. LC added to their lead in the fourth quarter, effectively putting the contest away with 13 points to take victory.

EWU's nine points were their worst offensive output of the 2022 campaign. Penalties once again were a big part of the Tigers downfall in Tennessee on Saturday, recording 11 for 98 yards. Additionally, EWU turned the ball over three times in the contest with two fumbles lost and an interception.

David Johnson finished his afternoon going 15-23 passing for 146 yards, no touchdowns, and an interception. De'Shaun Hugee led the way for EWU on the ground with 13 carries for 56 yards, while Ferante Cowart led the Tigers in receiving with four catches for 35 yards.

Defensively, Edward Waters did record two more takeaways with two fumble recoveries. Widmyer Garçon led the way for EWU with 10 total tackles, while Jaren Wilson recorded seven for the Tigers.

EWU will try their luck again next Saturday with at 2:00pm kickoff against Morehouse at Glover Community Field & Stadium.
