Dr. Mariah Pate of Tampa Bay Breathe Free Sinus & Allergy Centers said that she strives to put her patients at the center of her practice in order to devise personalized treatment plans.

"My practice’s philosophy is very patient-centric," Pate told the Manatee Review. "One of my favorite quotes is by William Osler (a Canadian physician). He says, 'If you listen to the patient, they'll tell you what's wrong'. For me, it's important to listen to patients, to hear what they're saying, to ask a lot of questions and then really pin down what's bothering them the most.

"A lot of people come in very overwhelmed with problems, especially if it's a sinus complaint or allergies. They have so many symptoms going on. So my job is to investigate and see what's bothering them the most. At that point, I like to ask and see what they're comfortable with. There are a lot of different options to treat sinuses and allergies. I try to do a personalized plan for each patient, so they feel the best they can as quickly as possible within their comfort level.

"I try to bring compassion (on a) day-to-day basis because I do know that people -- especially (those) who come to the doctor -- are scared and overwhelmed. They don't always know what they need. I try to help them and listen to them, to help them have a good treatment plan established so they can feel better."

Pate graduated magna cum laude from the University of Florida, Gainesville, prior to receiving her medical degree from Quillen College of Medicine at East Tennessee State University. She fulfilled her internship and residency at the Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University with a specialization in otolaryngology/head and neck surgery. Pate is board-certified and a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society, the American Medical Association, the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, the American Academy of Otolaryngic Allergy and the Women in Otolaryngology Section/AAO-HNS.

Tampa Bay Breathe Free Sinus & Allergy Centers offers a free online Sinus Self-Assessment Quiz, where you can choose symptoms you've experienced that might be related to sinusitis, receiving a score representing how much your sinuses impact your quality of life. Some symptoms, such as congestion and nasal drainage, are directly linked to the sinuses, while others, such as fatigue or an inability to concentrate, may be more mental or psychological in nature.

The office, located on 54th Avenue in St. Petersburg, offers comprehensive care to patients experiencing allergies, sinusitis, and ear and throat disorders.
