WASHINGTON – In a bipartisan effort, Congressman Vern Buchanan and Congressman Darren Soto have taken a stand to protect Medicare Advantage from potential negative impacts. The lawmakers are urging President Biden's Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) to reconsider a proposed rate notice that could undermine the program.

Congressman Buchanan expressed his concerns about the proposed rate notice, emphasizing the importance of not raising healthcare costs for seniors enrolled in Medicare Advantage, especially during a time of economic challenges. On the other hand, Congressman Darren Soto highlighted the significance of Medicare Advantage in providing accessible healthcare to millions of seniors and individuals with disabilities, stressing the need to preserve its quality and accessibility.

The lawmakers, in their letter to Secretary Becerra and Administrator Brooks-LaSure, emphasized the importance of accurately reflecting growth rates and healthcare cost increases in the final rate announcement for Medicare Advantage. They underscored the need for payment stability to ensure affordable premiums, intact supplemental benefits, and competitive provider reimbursements.

Grover Norquist, President of Americans for Tax Reform, pointed out the success of the free market aspects of Medicare Advantage and urged efforts to enhance the program's effectiveness rather than steering individuals towards less efficient alternatives.

The lawmakers acknowledged the growth and popularity of the Medicare Advantage program in recent years and called for data-driven decisions to uphold its affordability, benefits, and choices for enrollees. They emphasized the importance of considering recent data to meet the healthcare needs of seniors and individuals with disabilities effectively.

The efforts led by Congressman Buchanan and Congressman Soto reflect a commitment to safeguarding Medicare Advantage and ensuring its continued role in providing essential healthcare services to millions of Americans.
