Congressman Vern Buchanan and Dr. Mark Hyman have authored an op-ed in The Hill advocating for increased investments in healthier, nutritious foods. Buchanan serves as Vice Chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee and Chairman of the Health Subcommittee, while Dr. Hyman is the Chairman of the Food Fix Campaign and a 15-time New York Times Best-Selling Author.

The op-ed emphasizes using nutrition as a form of medicine. "We need to start investing in nutrition as medicine," Buchanan and Dr. Hyman write. They cite evidence from a study showing that 60 percent of Type 2 diabetes patients reversed their condition within a year by adopting a nutrition-focused approach. The authors argue that "better food leads to better health, lower costs and longer, healthier and happier lives."

Buchanan holds significant roles within Congress, including his position on the U.S. House Ways and Means Committee with oversight over Medicare programs. He also founded and co-chairs the bipartisan Congressional Preventive Health and Wellness Caucus, focusing on Food as Medicine, and is a founding member of the Make America Healthy Again Caucus.

In the previous year, Buchanan led a U.S. House Ways and Means Health Subcommittee Hearing titled “Investing in a Healthier America,” where Dr. Hyman testified about preventive medicine's role in addressing chronic diseases and obesity.
