Congressman Vern Buchanan, the Vice Chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, has been appointed to the Joint Committee on Taxation. This committee is known for its nonpartisan nature and consists of senior tax-writers in Congress.
Buchanan expressed his gratitude for being part of this esteemed panel. "I’m honored to join this respected panel, which has a large and experienced staff of economists, analysts and accountants who provide guidance to Congress on tax legislation," he stated. He added that he looks forward to collaborating with other members as Congress works on significant tax-cutting legislation.
The committee includes notable figures such as House Ways and Means Chairman Jason Smith from Missouri and Senate Finance Chairman Mike Crapo from Idaho. Rep. Smith serves as the Chair while Sen. Crapo is the Vice Chair. Buchanan holds the position of the most senior Republican on the Ways and Means Committee.
Established in 1926, the Joint Committee plays a crucial role in drafting legislative proposals, analyzing them, preparing revenue estimates for all tax legislation considered by Congress, and drafting legislative histories for bills related to taxes.
Besides Buchanan, Smith, and Crapo, other members include:
- Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Idaho)
- Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas)
