WASHINGTON – Congressman Vern Buchanan, Chairman of the Health Subcommittee, expressed his concerns about the cyberattack on Change Healthcare, stressing the need for a focus on patients. Buchanan stated, "I am extremely concerned about the status of the investigation by HHS into the devastating cyberattack on Change Healthcare."
The cyberattack on Change Healthcare, which occurred on February 21, 2024, has had far-reaching consequences, with significant financial impacts on health providers. According to the American Hospital Association, 94 percent of hospitals in the country are feeling the effects of the cyberattack, with nearly 60 percent reporting daily revenue losses of at least $1 million.
In a letter led by Buchanan and signed by 20 committee Republicans, concerns were raised about the lack of emphasis on patients in the investigation into the cyberattack. The letter highlighted the importance of prioritizing patient data protection and ensuring timely access to quality care in the midst of the attack on the nation's healthcare system.
The lawmakers emphasized the need for transparency and patient involvement in safeguarding their health information. They stated, "Patients are the best advocates for protection of their sensitive health information," underlining the severe and lasting dangers patients face in the wake of such cyber threats.
The letter also posed several critical questions to Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra regarding efforts to track stolen patient data, ensure transparency in the investigation, and collaborate with the private sector to enhance cybersecurity measures.
In conclusion, the lawmakers expressed their commitment to working with Secretary Becerra to prioritize patients' well-being and strengthen the security of the nation's healthcare system in the face of cyber threats.
